He shall glorify Me | John 16:14 – The Holy Spirit at work

He shall glorify me - John 16:14

We’ve been thinking about the need for the genuine, authentic work of the Spirit in our gatherings and were struck by this verse in John 16. We created this content as a post on our social channels IG and FB and thought it may be helpful to add some of these thoughts to our blog also.

This is simply an encouragement to be careful with what we attribute to the Holy Spirit and get involved with. It’s also a challenge perhaps to consider carefully what some so easily embrace in the moment. It’s a good thing to pause and consider.

For those that aren’t familiar with us, here at Acts 247 UK we do believe in the baptism of the Holy Spirit and welcome and encourage the gifts of the Spirit when we gather, however we also seek Him for wisdom and discernment in what happens among us. It is our desire to stay true to scripture and we are careful not to allow emotion, hype or even trends to creep in and to keep Jesus central to everything we do.

Let’s look at one verse:

He shall glorify Me: for He shall take of mine and shall declare it unto you. | John 16:14 ASV

In John 16:5-15 Jesus is speaking to His disciples, telling them that it is to their advantage that He goes away and that in doing so, He will send the Helper. In verse 13 we see that Jesus is referring to the Holy Spirit and this chapter describes the work of the Holy Spirit in several ways. to convict the world, to guide us in all truth, and… He shall glorify Me!

He, the Spirit of truth, will glorify Jesus. This short statement can easily be missed but let’s think about that.

Jesus kept His promise. He sent the Holy Spirit as we see in Acts 2, and today believers continue to receive the Holy Spirit and the gifts listed in 1 Corinthians 12.

In Acts 2:39 we read ‘For to you is the promise, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call unto Him.’

The ‘promise’ is speaking of the Holy Spirit from verse 38.

He shall glorify Me…

We are so blessed to walk with Jesus having received the gift of the Holy Spirit and to see His work among us, and in this post we want to think about that short statement from verse 14:

‘He shall glorify Me: for He shall take of mine and shall declare it unto you.’ ASV

The context above is clear, but in addition to this, we are particularly challenged today about the other activities of the Spirit still at work today among His people.

This is not an exhaustive study, it is simply one aspect of a wider topic that we’re focusing in on here.

So what does this mean for us today?

We all love to experience His presence and power in our gatherings, but we must desire truth, the authentic, the real deal. We must test what we see against scripture.

we must desire truth, the authentic, the real deal.

Jesus was full of the Holy Spirit, what do we see in Him? His work isn’t always comfortable and often extraordinary, but…let’s not get caught up in emotion, experience or make Him our entertainment, there must be reverence, and if you’re not sure, simply ask yourself…

Does this glorify Jesus?
